Black forest cakes are generally made of four layers of chocolate sponge cake. These
layers of sponge cakes are clubbed together using whipped cream and cherries.
For the frosting of the cake, fresh whipped cream is used and chocolate
shavings are used to cover the cake. Some fresh red cherries are topped on the
cake for decoration. The whipped cream is flavoured using cherry
schnapps. In order to moisture the bottom layers of the cake, a little bit of
cherry schnapps is brushed on them.
There are many stories related
to how this cake got its name. Some of the historians say that the cake is
called so because of the costume was worn by women in the Black Forest regions.
The dress they wore was black in colour just as the chocolate flakes;
the hat was red just as cherries and the blouse were white like the whipped
cream. In German, the Black forest cake is known by the name
Schwarzderkirschtorte.
